Liposome's are small-microencapsulated spheres, which may consist of many small droplets of material entrapped in a polymer matrix.
These materials can be derived from animal, vegetable, or synthetic sources. Generally, these materials - active ingredients, for whatever desired effect - can be placed microscopically into these liposome's.
The major component of these matrixes is often Phophalidylcholine - one of the most significant Phospholipids, which composes our cellular membranes.
For these Liposome's to be successful, for what ever they may be intended for, there are a few general rules, which they must follow:
Liposome's must be made from non-toxic substances, as they will degrade in our cellular system.
They must be the right size and shape.
Liposome's must maintain the active ingredients from the time of formation to the final destination.
They must release the active ingredients at the designated point.
Liposome's must have a certain affinity for the chosen organ or cell.
How do they Work?
Liposome's act as a delivery vehicle, which allow Active Ingredients - inside the Liposome's - to penetrate the skin. After they have entered the skin, Liposome's adhere to the cellular membrane and the membrane engulfs the liposome. Once they are inside the cellular cytoplasm, the Liposome disintegrates and releases the active ingredients. It is also suggested that besides actual absorption, Liposome's may form a breathable film on the skin, which reinforces the barrier function of the skin - which reduces transdermal water loss. This film also promotes the hydration of the conium layer of the skin.
